Establishment
- Establishment
A vague term for the group or class that has authority within a society, usually portrayed as being a conservative influence. According to critics of the Establishment, its members are said to exercise a controlling influence in public life, whichever party is in government. They are sometimes characterised as ‘the great and the good’, that is, the top people in the realms of the bureaucracy, business, church, law, military and the universities, among other institutions. They share a similar socio-economic background, based on birth into the ranks of the wealthy upper/upper-middle classes, attendance at public school and then an Oxbridge college. This equips them with a set of middle-of-the-road, moderate and consensual attitudes.
